2024 Lexus of Southport Golf Invitational - Links Hope Island
The Lexus of Southport Golf Invitational was held at Links Hope Island and, in the end, we were very thankful to be able to play after the deluge over the previous days. The course was playable but with carts on paths it would mean a slower than usual round.
Despite the heavy conditions, scoring was good and just over a shot separated the first three groups. The third placed team of Andrew Smart, Fiona Smart, Ian Mathieson & Cathie Mathieson had a fantastic start with a par, birdie and eagle in their first three holes - thanks mainly to Fiona who holed a 7 iron for eagle on the 4th hole. Things would slow down after that, including a bogey a few holes later before they found their mojo again with five birdies in ten holes to finish with nett 57.25. The runners up were just 0.25 shots better with nett 57 and after eleven holes showed no signs of a podium finish when they were even par. Things can change quickly on a golf course and they played the next seven holes in six under par, including a fantastic eagle on the 18th hole. Well played, Andrew Cary, Fiona Cary, Barry Smith & Janice Smith. The winners won by exactly one shot with nett 56 and were off to a great start with a birdie on their very first hole. A number of pars would follow before they were able to secure another birdie, but the key to their round was to keep bogeys off the card and in the end, they were one of the few groups to achieve that feat. Congratulations Kylie Heaslip (21), Bevan Heaslip (18), Mark Medcalf (21) & Kathy Medcalf (36). For the full results from the day, please click on the button below - 'Download All Results'.
