2023 Lexus of Southport Golf Invitational - Links Hope Island

The Lexus of Southport Golf Invitational was held at Links Hope Island on a beautiful day. The course was in perfect shape and that would mean low scores would be the order of the day, especially with all the help on course.

In the end, one team ran away with the win by just under 2 shots. The third placed team of Leon Hill, Shelley Hill, Sally Symons & Brian Richards had a rough start to be two over after five holes. The charity hole was their sixth hole of the day and they took full advantage with a generous donation. This clearly inspired them as they recorded three birdies in their next four holes to march up the leader board and eventually finish with nett 55.25, just 0.12 short of second place. The runners up had a similar start to third place and were languishing at one over after five holes. Incredibly, they then reeled off six straight birdies and had visions of a victory but they could not record another birdie in their remaining seven holes and finished with nett 55.12. Well played, Murray Wiedermann, Adrian Chambers, Simon Flack & Gael Tyler. In contrast, the winners had a great start with four birdies in a row. They came back to reality on their fifth hole with a bogey. Five more birdies would follow and then a discussion clearly took place on their final hole (the charity hole) and let's just say that AEIOU are $400 better off after their decision. The margin in the end was 1.75 shots between the winners and runners up. Congratulations Greg Matthews (8), Andrew Harvey (16), Brian Lassen (27) & Tony Malcolm (18) who finished with nett 53.37. Special mention to the Southport Sharks team who were ineligible to win the event who shot an incredible 58 that included eleven straight birdies at one stage!
